A century ago, in 1903, commercial seed houses offered hundreds of crops. The graph shows the variety of ten kind crops; Beat, Cabbage, Sweet Corn, Lettuce, Muskmelon, Pea, Radish, Squash, Tomato, and Cucumber. The biggest number of varieties among those crops in 1903 was Cabbage, followed by Lettuce and Radish in the second and the third place respectively. Cabbage had 544 varieties, while Lettuce was 497 varieties, and Radish was 463 varieties. Next, in the fourth place was placed by Pea and Tomato because their total varieties were in the same numbers, which was 408 varieties. The fifth and the sixth place were placed by squash with 341 varieties and muskmelon with 338 varieties. Moreover, the bottoms three of varieties among those crops in 1903 were placed by sweet corn, beat, and cucumber with the total of varieties were 307 varieties, 288 varieties, and 285 varieties respectively.

Eighty years later, in 1983, all of crops were extremely declined for their numbers of varieties. Compared by the rest of varieties, Tomato with 79 varieties, Squash with 40 varieties, Lettuce with 36 varieties, and Cabbage with 28 varieties placed the tops four among those-ten-crop. Next, the fifth place was placed by Muskmelon and Radish because their total number of varieties were in the same numbers, which was 27 varieties. Moreover, the bottoms four were placed by Pea with 25 varieties, Beat with 17 varieties, Cucumber with 16 varieties, and Lettuce with 12 varieties.

However, it’s really unfair if we only see from the rest numbers of varieties. We should assess their proportion of the decline by using this formula

By using the formula, the least of proportion of the decline was placed by Tomato because it was only 80.6 % for the proportion of the decline. Next, it was followed by Squash 88.3 %, Muskmelon 92 %, Lettuce 92.8 %, Pea 93.9 %, Beat 94 %, Radish 94.2 %, Cucumber 94.4 %, and Cabbage 94.85 %. Moreover, the biggest proportion of the decline was placed by Sweet Corn for 96.1 %

               All in all, we cannot say that which crop is better than or is worse than another crop just by considering its position in 1983, but we should see its proportion of the decline from 1903 until 1983. The reason is because the proportion of the decline is the fairest assessment in determining the most exist crop from 1903 until 1983.
