The Mathematical History of Mine
Dasrizal 2010110019

Now I am still thinking of why I took Mathematics in college as my major. I never dreamt about this before. I remembered that I cried since I couldn’t finish my Math quiz in second grade of elementary school. I was asked to do even numbers, but I didn’t know which the even numbers were.

Then, in the sixth grade, in order to prepare the National Examination, I joined a private course. Even though I did it well, I passed the exam with the average score. Finally, I entered a private junior high school.

In junior high school, I hated Math. The teachers were bad. I once got 100 for a Math quiz, and then the teacher treated me in canteen. However, it didn’t affect me to love Math.

The situation was getting worse when I was in the first year of senior high school. My Math teacher resigned from school, but there was no substitute teacher, and finally I got nothing. In grade eleven, the teacher was really bad, too. He only gave students assignment, but he never gave any explanation.

In order to understand Math deeper, I decided to buy some Mathematics textbooks. I studied myself. In the end of the second year, I got a good score for Math.

I was chosen to be one of tutors in Matriculation Program (it was a program of my high school where new students studied Math only for a week. They were taught by seniors). Since then, I had been trying to love Math.

My achievement kept improving in the last year of high school. I loved Math. However, I never had any passion to be a Math teacher since I prefer to focus in Chemistry. My chemistry scores were greater than Math. Hence, I dreamt to be a Pharmacist.

I registered to University of Indonesia to take Pharmacy, but I didn’t get it. I registered to Chemistry, and I didn’t get it either. I was desperate.

Then I found a scholarship program majoring Mathematics Education. I registered and followed all the tests. I made it! Now I’m taking Mathematics Education and I love Math.

In this campus, I am amazed by Math. I know it’s not easy. But I recognize that Math isn’t all about number. It is logic. It is beautiful. God might have a great planning for me. Hope that I will always Math, so that I can share the beauty of Math.
